VT-Event: GTA Workshop
August 14, 2018 @ 8:00 am - 4:00 pm
Many excellent faculty and experienced graduate students from across campus volunteer to share their skills, experience, and advice with those beginning as Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs). Participating students will have an opportunity to share questions and challenges with students from other disciplines.
All new GTAs must take this course.
Phase I schedule: Tuesday, August 14, 2018 8:30 am – 4:00 pm, Squires Student Center Colonial Hall. Registration starts at 8am.
Phase II schedule: Scheduled throughout Fall 2018 semester (usually late afternoon or early evening), phase II of the GTA workshop is made up of smaller sessions from which students will select what best fits their interests and needs. Enrolled students will be informed about procedures to register for the individual Phase II sessions via email.
The GTA Workshop course is designed for, and is a requirement for, new GTAs (not for GAs or GRAs). It must be taken once during their graduate program, ideally in their first semester.
Registration for GRAD 5004 Phase II Sessions
Students should be enrolled through their departmental graduate coordinator and cannot enroll themselves with HokieSpa. Enrollment typically opens to coordinators in early April for the fall semester and October for the spring semester and should be done as soon as possible to ensure students receive adequate correspondence from the graduate school on the requirements. Once registered, enrolled students will receive instructions about specifics of Phase I schedule and location and on enrolling in Phase II sessions.
Evaluation and Credit for GRAD 5004
This is a pass/fail class. To receive credit for GRAD 5004, students must attend (verified with Virginia Tech ID) all of the sessions in Phase I and three sessions in Phase II. In addition, they must write and submit an acceptable reflection of their GTA experiences and challenges. Specific instructions will be provided to enrolled students.
